Children's Cancer Network's Holiday Surprises Program

Imagine if your child's holiday wishes could not be met due to the financial strain of medical treatment. Initiated in 2005, Children's Cancer Network's "Holiday Surprises Program" assists families fulfill their children's winter holiday wishes while undergoing treatment for cancer. Families are identified by the local pediatric hematology/oncology practices from Phoenix Children's Hospital, Cardon Children's Medical Center, and St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. While 45 families have already been adopted, it is our hope to continue to reach additional families in need each year so they feel the warmth and love of sharing while dealing with the uncertainties of childhood cancer. Admission Bag Program

Children's Cancer Network's Admission Bag Program was initiated to help families realize they are not alone when dealing with the uncertainties of childhood cancer. Upon admission to the hospital, each family receives a backpack containing some basic necessities needed for an unexpected hospital stay. A hardbound journal, toothbrush, toothpaste, coloring book, crayons, a listing of local restaurants who deliver, and a cafeteria voucher are among the items in the backpack. In 2008 this program expanded to include not only families from Cardon Children's Medical Center but also those from St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. In 2009 the families from Phoenix Children's Hospital also became a part of this program.

Food and Gas Program
The regular day-to-day expenses of living do not stop when a family has a child with cancer. Funding to cover food and gasoline are consistently cited as major needs for families facing the unexpected diagnosis of cancer. Children's Cancer Network has attempted to help these families meet these needs by supplying gas and food cards to be distributed by the social workers at Banner Children's Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, and Phoenix Children's Hospital. Each of these hospitals provide services to the children and families of Arizona dealing with childhood cancer.

Cardon Children's Medical Center

Children's Cancer Network had the privilege of contributing to Cardon Children's Medical Center's pediatric oncology unit in ways that will benefit patients and families during treatment at the hospital. Children's Cancer Network purchased a computer for the Parent "Quiet Room" at the end of the floor as well as a washer and dryer for patient and family use. We are currently investigating opportunities to provide educational resources for patient and family use at Cardon Children's Medical Center.
