John W. Luttrell Scholarship Program

Children Cancer Network’s John W. Luttrell Scholarship Fund was established in 2005, receiving its initial funding from friends and family of John Luttrell who passed away that year from brain cancer. Children’s Cancer Network awards 2-4 scholarships each year to cancer survivors or their immediate family members whose lives and college savings have been changed by childhood cancer. Children's Cancer Network's Holiday Surprises Program

Imagine if your child’s holiday wishes could not be met due to the financial strain of medical treatment. Initiated in 2005, Children’s Cancer Network’s “Holiday Surprises Program” assists families fulfill their children’s winter holiday wishes while undergoing treatment for cancer. The families are identified by the local pediatric hematology/oncology practices from Phoenix Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and Banner Children’s Hospital. Each family provides input as to their needs and wishes for the holiday season. Then, Children’s Cancer Network volunteers “shop ‘til they drop” for each family. The fun continues at the annual wrapping party where shoppers and volunteers gather for an afternoon of hot chocolate, wrapping and camaraderie as we prepare all the gifts to be delivered to the families. For each family, Children’s Cancer Network provides toys, clothing, and basic household items, as well as gas and food cards. Often, through the gracious giving of our sponsors and supporters, we are able to grant special wishes that have included everything from additional beds so family members did not have to sleep on the floor, grass for the backyard so the children could play with their puppy, and of course, the newest video games, bikes, and dolls that help children live their childhood dreams! Over the past 3 years, there has been an increasing demand for this program. Children’s Cancer Network adopted 5 families in 2005, 11 families in 2006, and 13 families in 2007. It is our hope to continue to reach additional families in need each year in order that they feel the warmth and love of sharing while dealing with the uncertainties of childhood cancer.

Admission Box Program
Children’s Cancer Network’s Admission Box Program was initiated to help families realize they are not alone when dealing with the uncertainties of childhood cancer. Upon admission to the hospital, each family receives a box of goodies including some basic necessities needed for an unexpected hospital stay, a diary, calendar, some simple toys and activities for all ages and most importantly, thoughts and wishes for the best possible outcome of this devastating diagnosis. The social workers give out these boxes to our families when they are first admitted to the hospital. We have reached over 300 families through this program thus far and are hoping to expand the program in 2008.

Food and Gas Program
The regular day-to-day expenses of living do not stop when a family has a child with cancer. Funding to cover food and gasoline are consistently cited as major needs for families facing the unexpected diagnosis of cancer. Children’s Cancer Network has attempted to help these families meet these needs by supplying gas and food cards to be distributed by the social workers at Banner Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Each of these hospitals provide services to the children and families of Arizona dealing with childhood cancer.

Lodging

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, sometimes the family must travel away from home for treatment. Often, this family needs a temporary home away from home. Ronald McDonald Houses have met that need for families around the world since 1974 and in Phoenix since 1985. There is a nominal fee to stay in a Ronald McDonald House; however Ronald McDonald House does not turn away families who cannot pay. Children’s Cancer Network is proud to support the Phoenix Ronald McDonald Houses in the hopes of lightening the financial burden of those families dealing with childhood cancer.

In addition, in June 2008, Children’s Cancer Network will continue to support these families who need a temporary home away from home by sponsoring an efficiency apartment at the Ronald McDonald House on the campus of Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Children’s Cancer Network would like to thank The Room Store and Best Buy for their assistance in furnishing this apartment.
